No they are not known to fail. I have at least 2 that are several years old and I regionally change the HDD's in them and Archive the Old Drives. Though you can have a Interface Board between the USB Lead and the HDD fail and I have had one SATA Enclosure do this though it was an exception rather than the normal. It was also replaced Under Guarantee as there was a 12 Month Warranty included with the enclosure. However you need to first double check that the Enclosure actually has stopped working so Open the Drive Manager and make sure that the HDD isn't listed there. If it is and it wants you to format the HDD this is because you have not been using the Safely Remove Option when you turn off the HDD and the Partition Tables have been corrupted. This is a Known Issue with all external USB Devices if you do not use the Safely Remove Option they will get corrupted. If it is a case of the Drive being corrupted and you really need the data on it you should send it away to a Data Recovery House and pay them to recover your Data. However if it would only be nice to have the data back you can try one of the many Data Recovery Applications available. There are 2 types of these one will attempt to rebuild the Partition Information and the other will just pull the Files from the HDD. ![]() You want the first type as it will rebuild the Partition Tables and be quicker. On Tracks offering works a treat but it's also expensive Partition Recovery Software or you can look at one of these While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application. Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members. Of course if you really need the Data and you attack the HDD with one of these applications and mess it up a Data Recovery House is going to charge you a lot more to recover what they can off this HDD. So don't rush in until you are sure of things.
